May 15, 2017

As Pastor at Hephatha, I wanted to be sure to send a special letter of congratulations to all our graduates, both at our school and other local schools and to let the graduates know that we are proud of them and their accomplishment.

Whether you are graduating from elementary school, middle school, high school, or even college you and I both know that learning will never stop as new experiences and relationships will help to guide you along the way to true success. When I say, “success”, I am thinking of the success that God defines in the Word of God—the Bible. In the Old Testament book of Micah, the prophet Micah wrote, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

For those of you who are graduating from college or graduate school, when starting a new job, one of the very first things a person would need to know is the job description, or what is expected of you to perform your duties in an acceptable manner. Well, I believe the Micah passage just quoted is a wonderful “job description” that will bring tremendous fulfillment and yes, true success, in our lives whether we just graduated or not.

Now, I don’t have to tell you how this job description may seem very different than that of the world. Often times, it seems, at least to me, that we live in a society that does anything but “do justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God”, yet I believe there is great reward in following this wonderful plan set forth in Scripture.

I am sure those graduating from college, already realize this, but your happiness will not be derived by the size of your paycheck, but it will be defined by your relationship with God. In your busy day-to-day life, be sure to remember the foundational practices of reading the Word, prayer, and faithful attendance at God’s house. At times, to be honest, it may be difficult to do as you see others seemingly “getting ahead” even when they do the wrong things.

Well, thank you so much for taking the time to read my letter this week, and please let me know if there is anything else I or the Hephatha family can do for you or your family.

I love being your pastor!

May God richly bless and keep you.

Kindest Regards in Christ,

Old Testament Survey

Many Christians shy away from the Old Testament or look only at a few well-known passages. Much of the Old Testament seems obscure, and difficult to place into a historical and theological context. The result of such neglect is that much of the richness of the New Testament is lost. This Survey is designed to ease Christians into the Old Testament.

This course is designed to introduce you to the literature, history, and messages of the Old Testament. The Old Testament provides its readers with a history of the people of Israel and a picture of Israel’s relationship with God. Yet, the Old Testament is far more than the story of ancient Israel. This survey is broken into four major sub-categories: Pentateuch, Historical Narratives, the Prophets, and Wisdom Literature. This survey of the Old Testament has as its primary goal the presentation of the Gospel

This is an opportunity to slow down, take your time, and dive deeper into God’s word. May you be convicted, instructed, and refreshed.

Getting started is easy! Just take the below 4 steps.

  1. Send an email to the church office saying you want to sign up at HephathaChurch@Hephatha.net.
  2. Read portions of the Bible weekly.
  3. Check out the handouts and videos at your convenience.
  4. Interact with the other students and talk about what you are learning.

You will learn that following Jesus and joining God’s family, the Church, go-hand and-hand. You will meet new friends, hear the story of God, the story of our faith, and have the opportunity to hear how you become a vital part of our mission to reach the greater North Orange County Community at Hephatha Lutheran Church. For more information, call the church office.

"Sew in Love"

The sew in love group was started as a way to reach out and comfort people in a time of need with the gift of a quilt. We have expanded our ministry and quilts and crocheted blankets are now also given when someone is baptized or has a new baby.

Our prayer is that the quilts become a physical, touchable expression of care and concern that can be very important to a person.

We are always looking for more volunteers to help sew, quilt, knit or crochet, and fabric donations.

So far most of the supplies have been donated by those sewing. We are in need of fabric donations, preferably cotton. Fabric and Financial Donations may be dropped off at the church office.

Our next quilting meeting will be Wednesday, May 18 from 11:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Carol Rangel’s House. Call Carol Rangel at 714-612-3932 for information on what to bring to the meeting.

Men's Bible Study: Grace: More than we Deserve, Greater than we Imagine Men, join us Thursday, June 8, at 7:15 a.m. in Pastor Andrews' office as we start a new bible study by Max Lucado, Grace.

Grace. We talk as though we understand the term. The bank gives us a grace period. The seedy politician falls from grace. We describe an actress as gracious, a dancer as graceful. We use the word for hospitals, baby girls, kings, and premeal prayers. We talk as though we know what grace means. But do we really understand it? Have we settled for a wimpy grace? Grace has a drenching about it. A wildness about it. A white-water, riptide turn-you-upside-downness about it. Grace comes after you. It rewires you. From insecure to God secure. Couldn’t you use more grace like this? What about your family, your city, your whole world? Have they been shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Saved by grace? New York Times bestselling author, Max Lucado, invites you to settle in and consider God’s best idea—grace. It’s more than we deserve, greater than we imagine. And it’s all we need.
